Within the olive sector ASSAM is responsible for:
Characterisation and enhancement of the olive local heritage. Since 1994, with the scientific support of CRA (The Agricultural Research Council)– Oliveculture, Spoleto branch office, around 20 native olive varieties have been described to characterize the sensorial and analytical features of related monovarietal oils.
In addition, experimental and variety comparison fields as well as genetic conservation and multiplication fields have been implanted for the genetic and phytosanitary certification of the nursery within the ASSAM experimental farm of Carassi (AP). Several genotypes were analysed from cross-breeding programmes.
• Rationalisation of the growing technique: cold tolerance tests, olive trees pruning and management.
• Support olive growers in: phytosanitary safeguard, choosing the optimal harvest period, olive groves implantation, variety recognition and oil chemical and sensorial analysis.
• Training: each year vocational trainings on olive pruning and on growing techniques are provided for the efficient management of olive groves, to increase productivity and reduce production costs. In addition, some vocational training courses are addressed to olive oil tasters in particular on monovarietal olive oils.
• National events: yearly ASSAM organizes the National Championship of Olive polyconic vase pruning to increase olive growers’ skills so to be enrolled in the list of authorized olive pruners. Besides, ASSAM organizes the National Review of monovarietal olive oils to characterise and enhance the varieties of the Marche Region and Italy (database on: www.olimonovarietali.it)
